Excerpt read by Teacher

The piece about the coffin that the teacher read in the classroom was from Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities:

He would not have stopped then, for anything less necessary than breath, it being a spectral sort of race that he ran, and one highly desirable to get to the end of. He had a strong idea that the coffin he had seen was running after him; and, pictured as hopping on behind him, bolt upright, upon its narrow end, always on the point of overtaking him and hopping on at his side--perhaps taking his arm-- it was a pursuer to shun. It was an inconsistent and ubiquitous fiend too, for, while it was making the whole night behind him dreadful, he darted out into the roadway to avoid dark alleys, fearful of its coming hopping out of them like a dropsical boy's-Kite without tail and wings. It hid in doorways too, rubbing its horrible shoulders against doors, and drawing them up to its ears, as if it were laughing. It got into shadows on the road, and lay cunningly on its back to trip him up. All this time it was incessantly hopping on behind and gaining on him, so that when the boy got to his own door he had reason for being half dead.

Excellent. I love everything about this movie, and it is one of my top ten favorites of all time.

You're welcome! I love this movie, too!:) I had searched for this excerpt because it's one of my favorite parts of the film. I thought someone would appreciate knowing what it came from.

I have been wondering what became of Cliff's blond/red haired friend in the boat. Remember that boy? Not Carson, the deep voiced boy but another kid in the boat when Cliff was asking about Ricky and Carson was rowing.

WOW!! Ya got me! I've got this movie and I've got to go find it and look that up.
What an awesome story, though, huh? It had such an impact on me as a teenager, and even now. The Chicago scenery is cool, and the music is nice, too.
I tried to do some research, as well, on some of the actors.
The guy who played "Mike" ('Oh, Mi-iike'), did some tv, and kinda dropped off the earth. I would love to know where that guy is now/ what he does.
Matt Dillon and Cusak, of course, we know. The guy who played Linderman, Adam Baldwin, I've seen on different things. He was so awesome in the movie. Martin Mulle I see, still on television, and has always been successful. He's an accomplished painter, I believe. I don't know if Ruth Gordon passed away, or not. She was great in the "Every Which Way But Loose" movies, too. What about Chris Makepeace (Clifford)?
And what aBOUT his buddy with the low voice?? What was his character's name and the actor's name? That character is hilarious. He always reminds me of a character on a Disney Channel show we/my kids watch called "Even Stevens". The character is called "Beans", and he looks a LOT like that kid did.

This reading is one of my favorite scenes in the film. I really don't know why but it has a feeling to it that I just dig.
