ending doesn't make sense...

i know this isn't the tightest movie in the world but things generally have to make sense... and i do love this movie but this always bothered me even as a kid when i first saw it.

do you have to write SPOILER for an old movie?

in the end... when they all escape... they catch up to the lawyers and wilder and pryor find out they were cleared because the real bad guys were caught... but they just aided 2 other criminals in escaping... i would think they would have gotten jail time for that... and they just drive off in the end like it's all done and they're not in trouble. even if they weren't gonna get in trouble for the escapes... there had to be at least some official paper work and court rulings to get them out officially. but they just drive off.

this bother anyone else?

always found that strange

I always felt the same way. They escaped from prison, not to mention the 2 convicts they aided. That's illegal. Guilty or not of the bank robbery, they broke a crime when they broke out.

reply

I too thought the same thing. Even when I was a little kid and saw it in the theater with my dad. I remember thinking, "What kind of life can they lead now?"

reply

Yeah, since they tried to escape and helped others escape you think it is a whole new ball game. But remember this. They were wrongly accused and thrown in jail, then the *beep* judge didn't want to hear the testimony of the little girl that would've gotten them out in a heartbeat, so maybe it all evens out. Also, they decide to get out of there quickly before anyone realizes what else they had done.

Thanks.

It all evens out until Rory, one of the people they helped escape, kills again (he is a confessed murderer). Explain that one to the person's family.

reply

But then they'd be lying (potentially under oath), so that would just add one more crime to the ones they committed in the whole escape sequence...

reply

..there shouldn't be any doubt that they would at least have to appear in some sort of legal proceeding in order to finalize their permanent freedom. Otherwise they'd perpetually be avoiding the law. That being said..i've just always had such an affection for this movie, which i saw as a teen, that it never really ultimately mattered to me. The characters and actors and story are all hilarious to me, so i've been able to suspend judgement on the ending.

Well, they weren't supposed to be there in the first place so its justified.

I was 5 years old when I watch this movie, and yeah that ending always made me think that as well. It was a cool ending though, and a cool song to end on. Lol

reply

That bothered me less than the 5 year old seeing tattoos on hands that were heavily covered by the costumes feather.

reply

The ending is clearly a plot hole, but this is overall a mess of a movie.
