Question on Sentencing

Why do judges give out prison sentences that are more than 100 years long when the convicted will actually serve much less time than that, like the 125-year sentence Harry and Skip were given, even though it was actually going to be 30 years?

I'm not sure about this (so don't stat bashing away if I'm wrong, people) but if a sentence is longer than a person's life, it's usualy a combination of sentences. For instance, if a man has raped and killed 3 women, he may get 10 years for each rape and 20 years for each murder, thus 90 years.I don't think the sentence for a single crime can actually be longer than 25 or 30 years, according to the country's laws. The 125-year sentence in Stir Crazy was for dramatic and comedic purposes, I believe.

Never be complete.

Hmmm. . . That makes sense. As for the concept of the 125-year sentence, it worked and seeing the reactions from Skip and Harry was just priceless! :D
