How did David find Ann so quickly?

When he got out of the mental institution the next day he was in NYC from Chicago. NYC is huge! How the heck did he find Ann so quickly?

Also, do you know what the chances are that Mr. Butterfield would spot David on the streets of New York City right away like that?

Hugh was in the area of streets near Anne's apartment (as David was) because Hugh was going there with Ingrid to visit Anne, so that's why Hugh spotted David.

Yeah, but it was still a bit of a stretch even at that, of course, not impossible.

In the book it's not like that. He searches through phonebooks for months, looking for Butterfields, looking for Ann under her maiden name...
