They could of easily continued the relationship at school. No one was watching them 24 hours a day.

Jade's older brother Keith had the sense to see right through David. He knew David wasn't a nice guy and he was right.

How can you say David was not a Nice Guy?His Love was so sincere,I saw this movie for the first time In My Life on 7-8-2007,It was the Late Movie that My Local ABC Station ran after there Sunday night 11pm news cast.
This Movie absolutely fascinated me,I had never seen Shirley Knight In a Movie Before where she did not play a older mother Figure, and Martin Hewitt,I don't know what to say,I can't believe what to say about Him,except what planet was I on for the last 26 years, this guy was absolutely gorgeous,I could not get over how handsome he was, this was b4 he even took his shirt off,he spoke so well.his every mannerism was perfect,Considering this was his first film,He just amazes me on how good of a actor he was,not only on how he spoke, but when he spoke, his facial expressions,I went to Box Office Mojo, the Movie actually opened higher than Arthur, and on less screens, but It seem to make 33 millions dollars, was that considered a success back than,I know these movie studios, have a formula to consider If the movie was profitable,I know In 1981 adult movie tickets were around $3.50-$4.00,I am just trying to figure out why he was not on every billboard and offered ever movie role after this,His acting seemed so sincere,I actually felt his pain, and It was just a movie, when he asked If he had any Mail,my heart dropped for him, very seldom can any acting performance get the viewer so Involved that when I watched It again on my TIVO,I will record Ch 6 Million Dollar Sunday Night Movie,I forgot It was on my Tivo and I was watching the Commercials waiting for the show to start up again,When I found out the Orin theatrical release was 151 Minutes and my local station ran It In a 2 hour movie Block,I wonder how much they (CH6) cut out of the film, all I know that I remember some girls In High school talking about this Film and Martin Hewitt In this film with Brooke shields,I never knew what a great actor they were talking about, the film roles he got after this,he was over qualified for,I do remember him On General Hospital In 1986,I am going to look for my 1985-86 GH Episodes I have on Tape to see If I can Find His scenes,I found 1 episode Where He Is talking to Jack Wagner's character on 1/13/1986,I wish I could have had the chance to tell Him,that Hollywood Missed out on a great actor,He should be where Tom Cruise Is.....

i know i felt the same way as well, but at the same time even thought endless love was a box office hit almost all the reviews for the film were negative. both martin hewitt and brooke shields were nominated for razzi's for worste actors of the year, but at the same time they recieved the best young actor nominations as well (how condescending our public can be). I think what may have happened to martin was the fact that the first major film he was in, even though it being a box office success, did not rate well with critics. I read many reivews of this film stating that the only reason for its success was due to the nudity in the film that almost garnered it an X rating. If you check on youtube.com there is a clip of brooke shields expressing her frustration over the MPAA's rating choice.
As for martin I believe he starred in a family drama a couple years after endless love that was critically acclaimed but only lasted one season and was cancelled. After that, with the added competition of hundreds of other actors who were seemingly juast as attractive and talented as mr.hewitt, may have given martin only so many roles to pursue. I know that he has done so low budget horror and action films (killer party, out of control), and some softcore porn films (nightfire, nightgames). I guess it goes to show you that no matter how attractive and talented you are the movie biz is all about getting the right connections, good timing, and good choicing skills with the movies you choose to be apart of.

Martin's character "David" was nice and even loving. However, he was more obsessed than he was in love. The movie is a bit different from the book. The book portrays David more as the obsessed teenager who was out of touch with reality about his relationship with Jade and how her family felt about him. The movie doesn't play it up as much, but there are references made in the film such as: (when David's mother made David admit he had invited himself on a family outing with Jade's brother.... Another reference is when David and Jade are in bed looking up at the ceiling and David reveals some of his feelings to Jade and she tells him how scary it sounds to her). Yes, Martin Hewitt is a handsome man, but his character was an obsessed young man who was unhappy at home and he had pushed himself into Jade's life and it pushed everyone there away. He was willing to stalk his girlfriend and put her life in danger because he was so obsessed with her. That's not sweet - it's dangerous. A nice guy would have waited his lousy 30 days and taken lots of cold showers until he could be with his honey again instead of resorting to arson....If you want to tell Mr. Hewitt how much you like his work, you can call him in California. He's listed.

David was nice enough, but a guy might not appreciate his buddy making a play for his sister and then taking down her pants and have sex with her. Some guys just like their buddies to back off when it comes to their sisters... But David was obsessed, and that's the screw that was loose. I also thought Jade and David would have - and should have - seen each other at school without Keith knowing about it. Teenagers do that all the time. I also thought it wasn't cool for Keith and the father to encourage Jade to date other guys. Did you ever notice that at the party scene at Jade's house, ALL of the party guests leave all at once?? I've never seen that at a party unless everyone was thrown out.

Keith wasn’t a good guy either. According to the novel, he would befriend classmates and introduce them to his family only to dump them later. It further added to the tragic atmosphere of the whole story because David in his psychotic state still cannot see through these awful people.

In the book, the 30 day moratorium takes place in August, and school is out.

reply

That makes a lot of sense. In the film, it appears that school was still in session because they were studying.

reply

Maybe they didn't attend the same school, it is possible he was in Sr. High school and she was in Jr. High?
Just a theory...

"I've got a thumb, I've got a middle finger..."

reply

How could she be in junior high? She was 15. I think in the book, David was already out of school. Maybe it was different in the movie.

reply

Maybe her brother was into Jade and to keep David away? Nahhhhhh. But that was very uncool that dad and brother pushed her to date other men but the family being open and hippie, I'm not surprised .

Spoiler alert for them spoil sports out there! Y'all like spoiled milk, stop crying over it!
