What State was Valentine Bluff Supposed to Be In?

It had a West Virginia vibe but the accents seemed closer to Midwestern.

It takes place in Nova Scotia, Canada, though I'm not sure if they wanted us to think it was in the United States.

It's tough to see in a very quick shot, but when the miners are driving away from the mine to go to the bar at the beginning, "N.S." is printed on the license plates. It was filmed in Sydney Mines, NS. I was just there on vacation and stopped in the town for some photos of myself on what's left of the locations. It still looks similar (the town anyway - the mine is supposedly gone.)

I don't think they wanted us to think it was the states, as their accents were Canadian.

Given the prominent use of Moosehead Beer, I suppose the director expected everyone to know it's Canada, but other than that, there were no obvious references.

The accent did sound Midwestern - do they talk like that in Nova Scotia?

reply

It was shot at a time when many slashers were filmed in Canada and passed off as American (United States). I was in my early teens when I first saw it and thought the town was in the Virginia mining towns. Years later, it's clearly Canadian - not that that's a bad thing. I mean, what difference does it make?

Nova Scotia.

I always wondered if they tried to pass it off as American.

Being a Canadian, I always guessed it was somewhere like Nova Scotia from the bluffs shot and it does seem that it was. In one scene, where it shows a crate of beer (Moosehead), it says Canadian on it.

When I first watched the movie, I assumed the location was in the U.S. somewhere back east either in Pennsylvania or West Virginia. At the time I assumed Pennsylvania since the people didn't speak with southern accents. It didn't dawn on me that the real location was off the east coast of Canada. I can't prove it but my assumption is the director quietly intended U.S. audiences to assume it was the U.S. In the movie there was no overt reference to an American or Canadian location or nationality so the director was shrewd. The movie could appeal to American and Canadian audiences. For me it's just that at the time the people in the movie seemed to speak, walk, and act with typical American small-town mannerisms.

Canadian all the way...TJ had the most annoying accent of all the characters, with Axel next.
