Suffers from lack of a good score

I love 80's horror flicks, but this one despite it's high marks & dedicated fan base, just never scared me in the slightest. Now I love the miners outfit, it's cool looking & the pick axe a nasty weapon of choice. The hearts as a calling card is a nice touch too & the cast is decent for a bunch of unknowns, but the lack of a great creepy score ala Halloween or Friday the 13th seriously lessons its power to frighten. It's still a good early 80's slasher tho.

I personally really liked the score, but it was never released. I think it was done by the guy who composed the soundtrack for Curtians and Prom Night.

I like the simplistic yet eerie music at the very beginning. It doesn't get this interesting again during the rest of the entire film.

Paul Zaza was always a hack (and, as the "Curtains" Blu Ray featurette can attest, an ass), albeit one who could occasionally do a good job ripping off what other people were doing (i.e., the disco soundalikes of hits like "I Will Survive" in "Prom Night"). Horror and suspense was one of the things he could not do with any skill whatsoever. And, unfortunately, I thought his wimpy score on this one did indeed almost sink the picture. It was something akin to a temp track. He must have thought it was memorable, however, because he practically recycled the entire thing for "Ghostkeeper." I never understood why he was Canada's go-to guy. Not just for "B" movies but for "A" list projects.

Say what you will about the score, but "The Ballad of Harry Warden", written by Zaza, kicks all kinds of ass.

I thought the movie's music was pretty good myself.

'The Ballad of Harry Warden' as a credit song is great. The rest of the music is a bit unmemorable.
