The creepiest uncut death . . . (POSSIBLE SPOILER)

In my view, it's definitely Hollis' death. First, the way the shot from Hollis' POV get blurry as the nails are fired in is very effective -- like you are living it. Second, the death is much slower and more deliberate. Third, the music in the uncut scene is very creepy. Fourth, the shot of the miner standing there aiming the nail gun right at the camera speaks for itself.

My 2 cents . . .

YES, the blurry vision thing creeped me out as well. And the staggering around...yikes. Seemed very believable.

Hollis's nail gun death for me is definitely the most disturbing, but I find Sylvia's shower impalement death the creepiest. The whole set up and manner which it is filmed is drenched in classic 80's horror slasher style. Full of atmosphere and scares as the miners suits start dropping from the ceiling and eventually a gore drenched dead body, then the POV shot as the killer lifts Sylvia of the ground by her head and carries her into the showers for a vicious inpalement.

Personally, I think they had one too many shots of the opening murder. The close up shot of the pick axe point just before it protruds the flesh is too fake looking. Also, I think Mabel's dead corpse in the dryer had too many shots of it spinning around and also of the sheriff's reaction. This sequence became a bit overdone and lost some of it's impact because the build up was terrific with the sheriff wandering around and trying to find out where the smell was coming from.

Sometimes less is more effective when the mind is allowed to fill in the gaps, especially when a sequence is well filmed and doesn't need shock value to make up for it's shortcomings.

more is always better!
the pick axe trough the jaw, with one of the sharp points throwing the eyeball from its eye socket is sick, great stuff!

reply

Yes it was sick and great stuff! But I also feel that the second shot of the pick axe protruding was unnecessary. I would have shown the first shot - blood under the chin - and then cut to the POV of looking at the miner's helmet and then cut to the close up shot on the ground of the victim before being dragged away.

I've been watching right now the comparition caps of the totally uncut version of the film, yes, the violence is really Raw, brutal, but at times campy looking. There is the scene of the flashback murder of Axel's father when he was a child, and he got spattered. Also that girl's death in the showers is pretty graphic.

I wanna see too an uncut dvd of Happy Birthday to Me.

The bartender guy with the pick-ax, and the girl impailed on the shower spigget get my vote----man, the pick-ax part going through the guy's chin, made me jump a foot off my chair, and I've seen this movie countless of times, in the theatre, and at home on the original DVD release-----I was such a geeky 18 year old when this originally came out, and used to subscribe to "Fangoria", and remember looking at all the cool pictures of the gorey effects before the movie was released---when I saw it then in the 80's, I wasn't really dissapointed that the gore wasn't in it, just more puzzled as to why we saw pictures in that great magazine, and obviously they went to all that time and trouble on those effects, but........nada!! But I still thought even back then it was a great, creepy movie----but THEN, with this DVD----holy crap was I amazed (much moreso than the uncut "Friday the 13th"---but I'm happy with that too!)---wow, the shower scene also has such a fantastic impact now that it's been restored----all the scenes, really. My only beef, if there was to be one, is that with all the great technology they have for restoration now, and knowing fans have been waiting for this for YEARS, why didn't they try, TRY to clean-up the restored footage so that it more matches the rest of the film.....otherwise, I'm as happy as a little girl!

They did do a lot of work on the uncut footage as it was in pretty tough shape and they only had one negative to work from, but I'm willing to bet that it was rushed because they wanted it to add to the hype of the remake, which was probably half the reason Paramount finally caved on licensing the uncut DVD.

However I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if when the eventual blue-ray DVD comes out it looks even better.

Oh and my pick, I'd have to say Sylvia's death, with Hollis' a close second and Happy taking it in the chin as the third.

You are correct about that and I just watched it last night for the first time in years. That was a great scene in the movie to watch.

I really wanted Hollis to survive. He was the nice friendly guy who was always there to support his friends (his scene with T.J. in the junkyard, or telling Howard to take care of the girls in the mine while he looked for the rest of his friends). It was a really sad death.

reply

Yes it was a sad death of Hollis. That is how they wrote the script and they wanted to kill his character off even though he was a caring person who wanted to help his friends out.

The way they did that was very clever, same with the shower scene. I thought the creepiest was Mabel though - plus I really liked her! That was so disturbing to find her fried in the drier like that

It's delicious! And just look at that shine!

reply

I thought Mabel's death was the most effective, and I liked her also. But I guess there's no place in these films for an older lady.

It did seem like the sheriff should have opened to dryer to find her, though, rather than the dryer opening itself after he takes the clothes out of the one next to it.

Being cooked alive is most brutal.

Hollis's death was the best death in the movie. I do agree it definely the most distubing.
