What was with the pre-credits scene?

I didn't get it. Who was the woman that Axel killed? Why'd they go down into the mine? I liked the movie, but I don't get this scene.

He just killed her so he could use her death as a reason to stop the dance, but as far as who it was..... I'm cluless?!? hahaha

Remember when the cop opens the Valentines box and finds the human heart? The killer needed a heart, and that blond woman was the one to supply it...

the phony thing was the blood around the heart in the box looked too red. in real life it would be brown...

Yeah, I guess I understand, I just have a hard time believing Axel got a random woman to come down to the mine with him. Still a cool movie though.

I always figured she was a hooker from a nearby town... because Valentine's Bluffs seems like a small town where everyone knows each other, and also because she looked a little hooker-ish :)

I think that he was actually planning on having sex with her (and cheating on Sarah) but when he saw her heart tattoo it set him off and made him go into psycho mode.
