Music of the Bar scene

In bar scene dancers dance to an electro-pop song that is not included in the score cd. Is it also a Goldsmith composition for the movie? Otherwise who is the artist that plays it?

reply

It's simply called "Leisure Club" and it was composed for Outland by Michael Boddicker.

The Soundtrack CD I have contains a track called "The Rec Room."
It's an unusual technopop song written in an odd time signature.
( Most of the song is 11 beats per measure, while other
parts alternate between 7 and 6 beats per measure, while a
drum maching plays a steady 6-beat pattern in the background
throughout the whole song( ! )

It's the only non-orchestral track on the CD,
and it's the only song NOT written by Jerry Goldsmith.
It's also quite catchy and oddly melodic
inspite of it's quirky structure.

However, after going back and watching the video, I noticed that it's
NOT the same music featured in any of the movie's Night Club scenes.
There are 2 techno songs featured in the movie, but neither of them
are the "Rec Room" song featured on the soundtrack.

I really have no idea what those two songs are,
or where I could find them.

Does anyone out there have any idea?

I was interested in this music as well. I would have bet money it was Skinny Puppy. It is posible that cEvin Key from the band did it as a solo project. They hit the scene in 1984 but they could have done other things within the industry before their band's debut.

The music is called "Automatic Collect, Automatic Correct" taken from the album "Venus" with the japanese electronic artist Logic System (Hideki Matsutake) http://www.discogs.com/release/482101

I actually bought this LP a couple of days ago and was pleasantly surprised to find that track on it-- I didn't know it was on there, and I'd always wondered where the Outland bar music came from.

I was referencing the other music from the bar, but, yes, this song was played there too! Great catch!

Thanks for song info. I wish I had know this back when the movie first came out.
Hideki Matsutake was involved with the Japanese technopop band Yellow Magic Orchestra,
whom I was a big fan of at the time.

But according to my Internet searches, the "Venus" CD is out of print,
and used copies of it are starting at $80 and higher(!)
I suppose I'll have to wait until after I get my tax refund...

Hello,

Thank you for identifying this music that occurs in the film OUTLAND at 69 minutes and 12 seconds into the film. I noticed that the version on the album that you mentioned differs slightly from the version that occurs in the film (the film has more of a drum beat to it and there's some embellishment on the track).

There is another Leisure Club sequence that occurs 43 minutes and 14 seconds into the film that runs for approximately two minutes. Can you identify the album and song of this music?

Thank you.

Hi jrstryker-3,

This is EXACTLY the music I am looking for as well! But sadly, nobody answered your question. :( Have you been able to find the music by yourself in the meanwhile? If so, I would gladly like to know about it!

Ok, so here's what we know so far: Michael Boddicker is responsible for the track "The Rec Room" on the official Outland Soundtrack, but this is NOT the same music in the film. We know the music in the bar when Connery goes in to grab a drink and everyone is staring at him is a track called: "Automatic Collect, Automatic Correct" from the album "Venus" by Logic System. But, we have no idea who did the music from the first time the movie shows us the bar.

I noticed the song has a Roland TR-808 drum machine playing, which was practically brand new released by Roland Corp. Japan at the time the movie was produced. It later became extremly popular among acid/techno/ house music producers and is still a classic machine worth over 1000$ in the second hand market.

I was just rolling the end credits and noticed this:

"Leisure club music produced & composed by Richard Rudolph and Michael Boddicker, Performed by Ganymede."

reply

@AudioQuest:

So you're suggesting that this refers to the club music that start 43 minutes and 14 seconds into the film? That might very well be possible.

Unfortunately, it appears that this pseudonym "Ganymede" has only been used once, or at least in the film industry.

Does anyone know who "Ganymede" is?

I was able to find an Austrian "space-disco" group called GANYMED (without the 'e' on the end). I quote from Discogs:

Ganymed
Profile: Austrian (Vienna) space-disco group active 1977-1983, who played their last concerts in 1981.
"Ganymed Music is Music from the Universe" (originally
"Ganymed-Musik ist Musik aus dem Weltall," from Austro-Rock-Lexikon).

Would fit the bill as far as the time period is concerned.

reply

@AudioQuest: Yes, and it would also fit concerning the musical genre!

Actually, when you google "Ganymed" combined with "Outland" you get some interesting results as well.

Ganymed's record label is Bellaphon Records. I have contacted them via their website and asked them if it is possible to get in touch with former members of the band so I can ask them directly. I will keep you updated if I get any interesting feedback. :)

Film Score Monthly have released the expanded score to Outland.

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/cds/detail.cfm?cdID=453

Based on the track listing, it appears this release includes the other source music heard in the film (with the exception of the Automatic Collect, Automatic Correct music performed by Hideki Matsutake) that was composed by Richard Rudolph and Michael Boddicker, and performed by Ganymede.

reply

Thanks modano, this is very good news!!

This is exactly the song I was looking for:

But 25 US $ is quite expensive...can you also buy this CD elsewhere for a lower price?

The 2 CD set will be released on June 14. There may be other online retailers that may sell it for less when it is released. I don't know of any online retailers that are selling it for less than $24.99. Your best bet would be to do a search online.

reply

I don't think $25 is expensive for something this rare. Once it's out of print, you know someone is going to hawk it on ebay for $100.

I'm picking this up.

I wonder why "Automatic" was not included? Doesn't matter to me as I was able to find it, but the soundtrack is not really complete without it.

Now, can we get Warner Brothers to release this bloody film on Blu-ray??????

EDIT: Automatic is indeed on the new release: It's track 16: "Source #2"

reply

Received my CD in the mail today. Excellent! Sound quality is incredible. Just a note about "Automatic Collect" listed as "Source #2" on the album, it is similar to the original version by Logic System, but not the same.

reply

Those two pieces of music are quite futuristic for the time. It could have been disco!
