Edited version on VHS?

I recently watched this movie on DVD and it had much more graphic violence than how I remember having seen it on VHS many years ago.

On the VHS, the opening scene of the exploded body was removed along with the scene involving the character Sagan getting shot in the chest, to name a few. This version contained all the swearing so it wasn't a TV version.

I remember it was in the old Warner Bros. clam-shell style VHS cases with a silver paper trap sheet in the case.

Anyone else remember this version of the film?

The "hooker" scene where Sagan (?) has a knife and is cutting the girl seemed to me a second or two longer in the theatrical version way back in 1981.
When I saw the VHS version, I did a double take, sensing (but not being able to prove) that the nudity was cut down here and there--even the edit seemed too abrupt. A big fat drop of blood welling up on the hooker's skin when the bad guy had his knife held on her (a close up) was something I remember. Now, it's barely there.
