There will never be another film like this...

Because of that damned cgi!!!

What we have here is failure to communicate!

While i do agree with you; the prospect of combining CGI with puppets sounds really great. If computer effects are used as a tool and not a crutch it works quite well. After seeing Gravity I tend to believe CGI can work in the right hands.

CGI can be ok, but that isn't what this film is. It just has a different feel to it that you can't get with computers. It has charm. Hard to put into words. As I said, there will never be another like this.

I think the feel is more tangible, more real, touchable, whatever you want to call it, than what we get with cgi effects. I love this movie! I was in the 8th grade when it was released, and I remember being absolutely mesmerized in the theatre when I first saw it.

reply

That's certainly true.

Another thing about CGI is that it allows filmmakers to go back and to be so utterly perfectionistic to the point where it destroys cinematic "magic". No longer are we amazed by the magic trick-like way films would pull off effects as now we know that anything can be accomplished by a room full of nerds in China or New Zealand moving pixels around.

No longer do films have blown focus shots, visible wires, boom shadows, crewmembers who accidentally walk into the the frame, modern con trails in historical films, etc. but they don't have that "wow, how'd they do that?" feeling anymore.

Gone are the days of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA when you had only 1-2 takes to get everything right and get all the extras to charge in just the right way across the massive set. Nowadays the "extras" are just programmed 3D renders from Massive and the giant sets are built in Maya. Boooooo.

There ought to be a movement to make "handcrafted films" with a special seal of non-CGI-ness to it. Had they had this on the last EXPENDABLES movie, I may have actually watched it instead of skipping it after being burned by the first two CGI-laden toons.

Dark Crystal has the distinction of having the most elaborate and impressive puppetry every attempted on film, and without the need for computers. I wish that the film had more attention for that major accomplishment.

reply

Because it wasnt a huge hit. CGI in itself is not bad, if done well.

reply

I'm not saying it's bad, I'm saying you won't see another film like this. It has a charm to it that cgi lacks.

reply

Yes it has charm, true. But who says CGI cannot have charm ;-)
Ok that said, I think a new Dark Crystal should be done with puppets mainly. CGI can be used to correct errors. If it is done well, you will not notice any CGI.

reply

You won't see another film like this. The Muppet movies are close but this was complete immersion into that world.

Do studios have patience for this kind of thing anymore? I heard "Gravity" mentioned, and that took 4 years to make, too.

It would be nice if people with the same types of overlapping skills and talents that made the original still existed(various mixes of sculpters, engineers, performers, etc.).

Quien es mas macho?

Benedict Cumberbatch

Ricardo Montalban

I haven't seen Gravity but imagined it was mostly cgi.

What we got here is... failure to communicate!

reply

You are so right there is such a beauty and charm in this movie that cgi cannot even come close to matching.

reply

CGI can be used for little touch ups.
