Why did Kirk Douglas walk off of the set and get replaced by Richard Crenna?

Is it true that he simply didn't like Sylvester Stallone's attitude?

reply

Maybe Sly just doesn't like rapists..

reply

That makes no sense.

reply

well it does, He's implying Kirk Douglas is a rapist. There do seem to be some rumours and urban myths claiming the same. alledgedly. disclaimer: may all be bullshit

reply

Never heard that before.

i did a google seardh:
https://www.google.com/search?q=kirk+douglas+allegations

look at the first dozen results.
apparently the girl was called Natalie Wood.
I've got a feeling she's the one who later died on a boat , possibly because of this.

reply

Oh yeah. I think I had heard about that one years ago. Like you said before: it was Bullshit.

reply

It may indeed be bullshit, or the story may come out after Douglass dies.

Then in the Spring of 1954 Kirk Douglas invited Natalie to his room at the Chateau Marmont for an audition.
Her mother drove her to the hotel and waited in the car. When she got to the room Kirk gave Natalie a drink and told her he liked "young girls". Then he threw her down on the bed and brutally raped her. The attack lasted for several hours. When it was over he told her "If you tell anyone it will be the last thing you do.". The rape was so violent that Natalie started bleeding and had to go the hospital. Her mother discouraged her from filing a complaint because she worried it would hurt her movie career. At the time Kirk Douglas was one of the most powerful stars in Hollywood. He later admitted that he had been a womanizer and an alcoholic but he's never confessed to rape. Natalie was traumatized by the assault and spent years in therapy. Friends said she would "shudder" every time she heard Douglas's name.

Most hollywood folks tend to believe the story.

But yes, it could be wrong.

reply

It doesent look like a very objective story to be honest . Just the style of the writing shows the author isnt interested wether its true or not.

reply

That was the first one I clicked on, there are hundreds of different returns.

What makes this story more believable than a revisionist rape is that her mother dropped her off and picked her up and was aware of her trauma.

There doesn't seem to be any doubt that Natalie Woods was raped as the story describes, but the actor involved was not named specifically, so we don't know if it was Douglas or not. There have been blind items suggesting that Douglas will be named after he dies, perhaps with actual evidence. If that's true, he should have been named years ago and given the opportunity to defend himself. Once he's gone, he can't.

reply

Sounds like fiction.

Why would a man who.could have his pick of beautiful women want.to rape a teenager?

reply

He couldn't have Natalie Wood, that's why. Besides, she was probably asking for it...

reply

because a rapist can have his pick of beautiful women too. EVEN MORE SO!

reply

That doesn't answer the question for why Kirk Douglas didn't want to do this movie, didn't want to work with Stallone (as a legitimate question not calling for a smart assed response over an unsavory rumor) or wasn't in this movie?

reply

Three years too late, but no one else has answered so I will;

They were close to shooting, so close that his costume was already made and fitted, when Kirk decided he wanted to re-write some of the scenes in the script, if not the whole script. What it basically boiled down to was that in Kirk's "Rambo" Trautman was the "real" Rambo, and towards the end this is revealed when he subdues Sly's Rambo, leaves him cuffed to a radiator and the last scene has him driving away while he's wearing the head band. Or something to that affect, it's been awhile since I read about it.

Anyway, obviously everyone said that was a bad idea, he said if they didn't go along he was out, and they said bye. But it was so close to filming they didn't have time to get the proper fitting trousers for Richard Crenna, who had been an emergency last minute replacement, so the pants he wears in the film stop at the top of his socks. So they purposefully don't film him where you can see his ankles/socks for whatever scenes that was an issue for.

reply

THIS makes the most sense --- Sounds just like Kirk

reply

I think it was he being told it is over in Hollywood for him. He wanted at the day of the filming to change the end and have had killed Rambo. Driving off like Shane did wearing Rambo's headband.

reply

I wonder if this is why Stallone never worked with Michael Douglas. The latter produced Face/Off and was more than happy to not go with the original idea of Stallone versus Schwarzenegger.

reply

More to the point, how come Michael Keaton never worked with Michael Douglas? It would've been kind of funny if they did something about mistaken or stolen identity like Face/Off since Michael Keaton's real and still legal name is Michael John Douglas. He had to change his stage name because the Screen Actors Guild doesn't allow people with similar names.

reply

Kirk Douglas is not in this movie. What scene are you referring to?
