Mayo a Kirk wannabe?

Filmed in the early eighties, with the myth of Star Trek still relatively fresh in the mind. Mayo, except for his hustling seemed essentially a flawless character. He may have been a douche, but he didn't make mistakes when it came to performing on the field. He had that same vigor to win.

One good example in the oxygen chamber, you see Mayo start getting a little giggly while performing a task, but then as soon as his friend starts losing it, he shakes it off. He shakes it ALL off, even as other characters are still dazed. Even the oxygen fed corpsman is late to the game.
