Jennifer Beal's biraciality

As far as I understand most people perceive Jennifer Beals to be white. And certainly in the L Word she appears to be more white than anything else (although I would still question her heritage). But I was surprised when I watched Flashdance for the first time the other night that she looked pretty obviously mixed race, much darker and more African looking than she does in the L Word.

But of course race is not mentioned in the film, so I assume she is supposed to be white. This makes me wonder whether the whole perception of her racial make-up subsequent to the film is based on this fact. It simply wasn't mentioned, so people assumed the character was white, and so therefore the actress must be white.

I mean, if race wasn't mentioned at all in the film, which was the impression I got, then people just assume the character must be white. She could just as easily have been supposed to be black, but people assume, if it isn't mentioned and no relevance is accorded to race, and the actor kind of looks vaguely white, that the character must have been supposed to be white.

I imagine if the character had been coded as black or mixed race (which is unlikely I know), then Jennifer Beals would have been seen as a black or mixed race actress thereafter.

It just shows how people's perception of race can be manipulated. To me, she looked obviously mixed race in the film, but ambiguous enough, just, to pass as white. I guess loads of people simply didn't pick up on it, because there was no cue for them to pick up on race, she was presented as white, in that race wasn't mentioned, and therefore she must be white.

I don't see colour, I just see people.

We tried so hard to create a society that was equal...

Same here.

She looked so obviously birracial to me aswell. Especially on one scene where she was laying down in the bed on the telephone. I don't understand how there was even a question and honestly, if people didn't know she was birracial, I assume they would have thought of her as hispanic just based on how dark her skin is.

What two races are we talking about?

reply

She is part black, part white. Look her up on wiki.

reply

I thought she was French- especially with all the Catholic stuff in the movie- in the same way the girl from the Beach is French- Virginie Ledoyen.

reply

Oh just in case, to be clear i was referring to her real life biraciality... Sorry if the other poster meant it regarding the film.

reply

Yeah Afro-French. Let's face it, homegirl had an afro and tanned skin and there is no way a pure European would look like that.

Black and white or Hispanic. She looks ethnic.

I think we need to ignore the actor's race, unless it is important for plot. Actually it would be nice if we did that with all actors...then more Black actors would probably get different/more roles in a broader spectrum of films. Sorry i strayed a sec, anyway what I mean to say is that we should just assume they are what they most look to be if it is not crucial for the role.
One biracial actor (who I really like perhaps for his looks more than his acting ability, which is good as well) is Wentworth Miller. I never knew it by looking at him, but now that I know I can see it. He plays roles of white men, however he once played a part black man in a good film starring Anthony Hopkins.

at the time when the movie was out in theaters, i remember everyone thought she was italian. with curly hair. but most people had curly or permed hair then so the hair was normal for the day.

we all thought she was an italian chick.

also i have read after the fact that the studio intentionally made it vague as to her ethnicity, in the promotion.

but yes she is mixed. her mom is white and dad is black

reply

yes, same here, i just assumed she was italian like some of the other characters, not that it really mattered for the story.

she still looks great too, if you've seen her on "lie to me".

reply

She is, in FACT, a product of an interracial marriage. Her father was a negro & his name was Alfred Beals & her mother was an Irish Miss Cohen (probably a Jew).

reply

No one uses the term "negro" anymore to describe African Americans. It is outdated and offensive

You are a disgusting excuse for a human being.

I thought he was white until I was watching the movie with my mom and she commented that she looked mixed race. So then I looked it up and I'm still surprised. To me, she looks white.
