The golden egg????

Someone needs to explain this to me. I must have missed something and it's driving me nuts.

So 009 is found dead with a fake Fabergé egg. They find out the real egg is being sold at an auction. Bond goes there and switches the fake egg with the real one. Kahn buys the fake egg for a lot of money without knowing, but finds out later that Bond has the real egg.

Later on in the movie, Q puts a tracking device in the real egg and Bond allows the egg to be stolen from him so he can track it.

After Kahn receives the real egg he meets with Orlov, who smashes the real egg?!?! Why?! What was the point in all that? Why did they even need the real egg to begin with? Can someone please explain this.
