So why does Laura invite him to her Christmas party, then act so aloof? Was she trying to put him in his place?

She was clearly just playing games. When he picked up on this and confronted her at the party, she basically asked him to leave.

Tony thought he'd be getting a better deal with Laura by cheating on Jackie and he ended up being on the short end with both of them, that I think was a sobering moment for him.

Manram24, You described the situation perfectly, I really like the scene after Tony finds out that Jackie finally rejects him and he's all alone, the montage starts with the Bee Gees song, Someone belonging to someone, as he walks back to his mothers home in Brooklyn, perfect song to place in that scene.

It was a plot device to get the two characters in a scene together because this film’s storyline was paper thin. That’s it.

I thought she might be trying to show the director that she has better chemistry with Tony than the current partner to prompt him to give Tony the lead. However, later dialogue ruled that out. Still it would have been a better motivation than the lame “playing head games” with Tony.
