Is the Cosby Show and Family Matters the only two black longest running sitcom? I can't think of anymore Fresh Prince could have had more but stopped at 6, A Different World had only 6 seasons.
I didn't know the Jeffersons had that many seasons. I thought they had 6 also. I can't stand Tyler Perry so called TV shows it seem like the seasons aren't that long like maybe 10 episodes a season.
Yep, The Jeffersons premiered almost 40 years ago(wow... i'm so old. I was six when it premiered) and ended abruptly in 1985. The cast found out that the show was canceled through reading about in a newspaper. 227 was supposed to start in the fall of 1986, but after The Jeffersons being canceled in the Spring of '85, NBC bumped it to air in the fall of that year.
It's up for debate about House of Payne. It's the longest running black sitcom as far as episodes. But only because Because Tyler cranked out so many episodes in a short span of time(I think it was 100 episodes in two years or something). Even Jaleel White himself made a joke about it. I would still would put the Jeffersons on top with 11 consecutive seasons on the air. Family Matters second and Cosby at third. Close behind Cosby would be Girlfriends and maybe Diff'rent Strokes if you consider that a black sitcom.
I would include The Game for nine years, but it was on hiatus for almost two years before BET picked it up. And the last three seasons are only 8 episodes each.
I've always considered FOL to be a black sitcom since one of the leads is African American, but none of my black friends felt that both DS and FOL was black enough for some reason...
