What are the theories on the tunnels in The Last Car?

Since no one knows for sure, what are the theories about what the tunnels mean in The Last Car?

Ever see the Twilight Zone episode The Hitch-Hiker? It was the same thing in this episode; she was trapped in a sort of limbo.

I looked at those tunnels as sort of a void netherworld where the souls got lost temporarily in transit to their final destinations to heaven or hell. This could explain why they would appear in their dead state. When the girl realized she would never get off (after getting her ticket checked of course) only then did she realize she wasn't crazy and was in the same boat with the rest of them.

Sounds like Freud's take on death. If you miss the train you live, if you catch it, you die.

Well, if you subscribe to the "Sixth Sense" theory, you could say that the tunnels reflect them in their true states (being dead).

And as the episode progresses, their true states are revealed more and more.
