Tony Danza shuts down possibility of a Who's The Boss? reboot... as actor says it can't be done without his late co-star Katherine Helmond

He played Tony Micelli on Who's The Boss? from 1984 until its series finale in April 1992.

And on Monday, Tony Danza revealed he doesn't want to reboot the iconic series because of co-star Katherine Helmond's passing.

The 68-year-old actor said: 'First of all, I've never been a big fan of these reboots. [But] no, can't reboot [Who's The Boss?] because we've got no Katherine Helmond, that's why not. That's it,' he said on Good Day New York via People.

They can still reboot it they just can not continue it. There is a difference.

I don't know why they would reboot it, it did well and had an ending that made sense and worked.

Looks like it might be coming. I don't know what the point will be though. It is no longer edgy to have a male housekeeper bringing up his daughter alone. And of course his daughter now is grown up anyway. Reminding me a little of the Will and Grace reboot, pointless.

I think the reboot will be centered on Samantha's character?

reply

Possibly but I am trying to work out how it will be different to any other sitcom about a middle aged woman? The original premise was different. I think this will be another one season wonder.

reply

I think you are correct. The original show was good because the writers didn't shy away from the dilemma between Tony and Angela, which I think really was Tony's dilemma. As I recall, in the last episode, after Angela tried giving up her corporate highflying life to follow Tony to his teacher job, and was unhappy, she went back to the original house, and the last scene was Tony giving up HIS dream job and returning to her. So in the end, Tony gives up the thing he wants but Angela gets to keep the thing she wants. It's sad because both of them can't win at the same time, and that is what made it compelling.

I don't know if a reboot would really have the same staying power because people will be going in with the memory of that dilemma as the core of the show, but the dilemma already played out to its logical end. Are we going to watch the same dilemma again? A totally new and different one? I don't think it will resonate the same way. The idea of a man giving up his career dream for a woman also, I don't think will have the same resonance now as it did then, since there are more stay-at-home dads and more dual-career couples.

I don't think I ever saw the last ep of Who's the Boss. For me it is a no brainer, who earns more money? Couldn't Tony teach somewhere else? Perhaps I am too practical?

That is my thought, they will try and repeat the whole thing but now with Sam and a partner going through the same thing. But it's just not interesting anymore. Not to mention now you have working remotely and all kinds of things that would have allowed Angela to do her job and Tony do his.

reply

Hahahaha. Yeah I think the whole problem doesn't really translate easily to the modern world.

Yeah now adays guy staying at home to do housework is not shocking. My baby brother earns much less than his wife--and desperately wants to stay at home with his future kids. He hates dressing up in a suit.

I didn't watch the Will and Grace reboot. It seemed like they wanted to reboot it because the ending of the original series was a little more bitter than bittersweet. So they wanted a more cheerful alternate universe or something like that. Maybe they did it in a way that made sense, but I actually really liked the way they ended it the first time around, so I didn't really want to ruin that by seeing another ending.

reply

I admire him for that. Doesn't happen often when an actor turns down easy money.
