Was this movie a hit?

When it originally came out was this movie a hit? I don't mean huge blockbuster but did it make a decent amount at the box office considering it was sort of a crude comedy.

I also wonder if this put Hanks on the perspective radar as far as him getting better or at least more high profile work.

Yes it made Hanks a party animal. Splash made him also an actor to keep in mind, but BP was very funny and it was there with all these National Lampoon movies the last 3 years, but dont watch TAJ it sucked

It most definitely was a hit for Hanks. Not as big as his acting debut in "Splash" but pretty big for a crude sex comedy. Compared to all his 80s comedies it ranks 5th...

Big 6/3/88 - $ 114,968,774
Turner and Hooch 7/28/89 - $ 71,079,915
Splash 3/9/84 - $ 69,821,334
Dragnet 5/26/87 - $ 57,387,516
Bachelor Party 6/29/84 - $ 38,435,947

Yeah, for 1984, it did very well. The 38 mil is equivalent to about $170 mil today.

Bachelor Party only had a six million dollar budget so yeah, the 38 million domestic box office is pretty good. It also made about 19 mill in video rentals.

don't understand why its rated so low .... it may be because they edited the ##$$%% out of it when they show it on TV now..... was a favorite of mine way back when.

reply

Actually it would be about $77mil, not $170 mil.

Right, but take into account there were FAR fewer screens available back then so much fewer showings. Had it screened on the 3,000 plus screens movies do now it would've come close to that. That 38 screen theatre complex at the end of BP doesn't seem so far fetched anymore.
