Im gonna go ahead and lay my neck out there for all the haters and tell you all that upon seeing this around 7-8 years old back in the early 80's it scared the living sh*t out of me. Which is exactly why I am about to watch it now at age 30 from netflix, just to pay homage.

damn straight man! i also saw this movie when i was around 10 yrs old, and it friggin traumatized me for years! lol, im not joking either. i still to this day have an occasional nightmare about it. i wont even walk near a manhole cover!

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I saw this movie maybe 2 times when I was younger because I was too scared to watch but the scenes were burned into my head for years. This and Heavy Metal messed me up during my childhood.

shareMost horror films are 30x times scarier when you see them when you're younger like Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (78 Version) and The Thing, hell, I know people that scared to death of Michael Jackson's Thriller to this day. When I saw CHUD, it scared to hell outta me, awesome flick. Classic.

I have to agree that it does help if you see this as a kid or teenager. It ALSO helps if you see the shorter 88 minute theatrical cut.
I watched this with friends a few years ago when Anchor Bay released it on dvd (with the 96 minute director cut) and I would agree.. it got kind of boring in the 3rd act (a lot of scenes in Kim Griest's apartment building were added in the longer cut, and they needed to go).
So if you try watching this, try finding the 88 minute version and put yourself in an 80's mindset.
