Difference between televised, and theatrical editions.

Why is it in the theatrical version john good man gets killed in the end and in the televised version it happens before? In the theatrical they say there was a massacre at a diner but then they don't show it until the end. Was it because they wanted a sequel ending? Or that they televised ending was weak.

I think the theatrical version had the diner attack at the end as an anti-climax. Of course, when I first watched it way back in the mid 80's on HBO in my early teens (when I wasn't supposed to), I never made the connection to the diner that was destroyed near the climax of the film and the one at the end. I just thought that New York has lots of diners and well, even CHUDS like diners. Besides, how can you NOT like a movie ending like that one where you can hear the CHUDs munching on people over the ending credits?
