What the +!^@+?! (Spoiler!)

I'm sorry. I dug the movie, but the ending has to be one of the sloppiest things I've ever seen! OK, so the big bad govt. guy is after them, he crashes the car and dies, the couple kiss and Daniel Stern is helping the wounded cop. And THAT'S HOW IT ENDS?! What?! No explanation about what's happening with the CHUD? Doesn't even show if they're being killed or not! Did I miss something? Can't remember the running time, but did I just watch the truncated version and not the director's cut? Like, is there something that I didn't see? Seems really weird that they'd end it that badly after such a fairly good set up.

leaving it open for a sequel, maybe?
we couldn't have a world without any CHUD's now, could we?
anyhow, the CHUD's are really the center of the movie, but the focus the entire time was on the characters and their development, i thought.
