The Drive in dancing scene makes me cringe

I like this movie and saw it when it first came out, but the drive in scene where Aeriel plays the boombox makes me cringe. Bad music, bad dancing, bad hairstyles. Anybody else agree?

I agree with you about the bad hairstyles. The 1980s was a bad hair decade. I like all of the songs on the soundtrack.

My wife has tried to destroy every single picture taken of her between 1984-1988 because of the stupid perm trend. She HATES how her hair looked, and her hair was normal-looking by 80s standards, My hair looked ridiculous also (this was well before we met). Yeah, the 80s were strange -- just a weird, naive, cheazy-azz time. The trends were absurd, the films were incredibly goofy (where do we start -- Footloose? Flashdance? The Goonies?), the clothes were just awful -- the football player shoulder pads on women and acid-washed jeans on guys...ugh.

But I will always love the music!

I remember as a kid in the 80's my sister and I would make fun of the styles of the 60's and 70's. We would laugh at the photos of our mom in bell-bottoms with "Marsha Brady" hair. Remember all those looks and hairstyles came back in style.

Ha, ha, you're exactly right. Bell bottoms and any 70's styles were not cool at all in the 80's. It took a while for me to finally buy even bootcut jeans because of the stigma.

So I need to find my hair dryer and stay ready for the 80's again !

The one look from the 80's I hope never comes back is shoulder pads. I hated those and EVERY shirt had them, even T-shirts. I miss the tight rolled jeans and leg warmers.

Having been in high school in 1984, it just looks "normal" for high school kids to me.

And don't forget the glasses styles! So many young girls and women wore those oversized glasses with the curved temples, eeeew! I always thought they look obnoxious.

Same here, I was a Jr. in '84 and loved how they tired to make Ren stick out like a "city kid" by wearing a tie and bedhead. Most of us back then dressed like the town fold (simple jeans, tees and flannel) but you'd get the occasional trend setter trying to look like a music video. Areal (Ariel?) seemed to be aping the Urban Cowboy look of a tough, but somewhat vulnerable tomboy with a reputation.

I just listened to the movie commentary and watched the special features and in it they mention that in that drive-in scene they weren't supposed to be dancing, only doing movements that mimicked dancing. They needed something upbeat to start the movie off with but obviously couldn't show the kids dancing since they were supposedly forbidden.

What I'd like to know is: What would've happened if they'd have been caught dancing? Are the police seriously going to arrest and jail an entire school full of teenagers?? Like, massive violent eye roll!
