Rebel Without a Cause and Footloose share three major parallels. One major parallel are the two protagonists Jim and Ren moving to a new high school, attempting to fit in in their communities, and having to display strength over weakness in order to survive high school. In Rebel Without a Cause, it is important to Jim that he appear more masculine and avoid being considered a chicken. Frequently, Jim looks outside of his family for confirmation that he is competent and superior, and in the process he creates a surrogate family. In Footloose, Ren also values his reputation. Ren has trouble making friends at first, but his quips, sarcastic banter and witty remarks makes him less of a pariah. Frequently, Ren employs a façade in order to avoid being a social outcast. In one scene in the beginning of the film, on Ren’s first day of high school in the new town, as he walks down the hallway, he is bombarded with shoves, raised voices and the slams of the locker doors. Someone yells out that he needs to comb his hair and another person bumps into him.
