were was the police and the school and mother !!!!!!

ok recently watched this after not seeing it for many years so my problem with the film is as follows:

firstly the school a new student arrives from another part of the country and over a few weeks his first at the institution has at least three times been beaten with clear injuries so did they his teachers not stop and think hang on a minute here what is going on here is he being beaten by his parents or another party.

the law why was the police not called and the injury's not investigated.

thirdly his mother why would his mother "after seeing her son coming home with injuries multiple times" not think hang on a second what on earth is going on here and storm into the school and demand answers.

Sign of the times really. Kids in the 80's were in gangs and always fighting with each other. Teachers just wanted to put a shift in and go home without any hassle. As such they showed as much interest in their students as their students showed in them.

If you mean by the teachers, then see above. If you mean by Daniel, then maybe he felt nothing would be done.

Daniel at first lied. Then he basically told her not to interfere. Lastly, he said he needed to learn Karate to look after himself. When his mother said fighting doesn't sort anything, he replied 'Neither does palm trees'. At this point his mother probably felt that getting involved would only make things worse.

You're old enough to kill, but not for voting....

hey thanks for the reply they are good answers - i can understand daniel lying to his mother but most mothers would still storm the school and contact the police to just leave him to his own devices while witnessing the injuries amounts almost to neglect as it does with the school can you imagine your student turning up for classes with clear injuries not once but three times and not question them or at least contacting the head teacher or social services is also gross neglect and would most probably end up with a huge libel case.

Most mothers...today. In this day and age of helicopter parenting, and never letting a kid work their own stuff out, you're absolutely right. But back then, parents were generally less hands-on. Plus, he was in high school, not a child, and coming from a rougher neighborhood. It wasn't all that shocking.

Welcome to the world before the year 2000 ! Up until then, Kids had to deal with Bullying w/o your parents, school, and police !!!

None of those things would happen in the 80s. As someone who was bullied then I can certainly tell you teachers would look the other way and pretend it's not happening. No win situation for them. Parents would just tell you to toughen up and fight back. Parents who cared and actually wanted to do something about it worried they'd enrage the bullies and they would take it out on their kid worse. Police wouldn't get involved in kid's altercations. It really wasn't assault if it was kid-on-kid. Only if weapons were involved.

Different times...different times
