How do they go to the same school ?

She lives in Beverly Hills. He lives in Reseda. They're 20 miles apart. So how do they go to the same high school ? Did they ever mention it with some quick line ? Was he somehow going to a different school near his mother's office ?

reply

She lives in Encino, not Beverly Hills. Shared school districts? Maybe they went to private school? Daniel on a scholarship arranged through his Mom's job, perhaps?

When they are arguing in the arcade Daniel says : "I guess a guy from Reseda can't date a girl from the Hills ?"

reply

Encino Hills. Hilly neighborhoods are generally ritzier in LA area because the houses have nice views, bigger lots.

Reseda is not bad; it's not like he was living in South Central. Christ, a home today in Reseda or Lake Balboa runs about $400,000 average today. BUT, he did live in a run-down apartment complex. Maybe if Daniel had lived in one of the nice small homes in Reseda, Allie's parents would have accepted him. Or maybe not; he'd probably still be a poverty case in their eyes.

I think your right. He was like the thing from another tax brackett

I agree, that's one thing that confused and bothered me when I lived in L.A for a few years...People in California refer to a lot of decent areas as "bad" or "ghetto". Even, the actual bad areas like South Central and Compton are NOT cheap !!! The average home price in Compton is $325,000

I wondered this too.

Why is she in a public school if her daddy is so balla too? Lol

I'm not sure in California how it would work back in the 80's. In some parts of the country, public schools aren't bad and rich kids still went to them. Ali seemed very rich but not uber rich, so if the public school was ok she could have gone. Usually kids go to private schools to either get in a better college, or escape public school if it's bad. So if it wasn't a bad school I guess it's plausible, but the OP brings up a good point. I guess we are to assume it wasn't a bad enough school to escape to a private school. I have no idea on the logistics there, as to whether that's the school she would be zoned for.

All these years and the thought has never once crossed my mind. You have ruined the movie!

Really? I first watched this at age 7 and I wondered right from the start why poor -boy Daniel and rich kids Ali and the Kai were all at the same school. I always figured it was some oddity with the US schooling system.

Developers like to build lots of high density apartment buildings at the fringe of cities with great school districts. Families who can't afford to buy a house in these cities can still enroll their kids in their "magnet" "blue ribbon" schools since they reside in the district.
