Robert Englund Still Wants to See a Prequel to ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’

"“I’ve always thought that [not having a prequel] is a misruling in the mythology of A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Englund told the crowd at the recent Monster Mania convention in Hunt Valley, Maryland. “It got close to being rectified with Tobe Hooper’s pilot for the TV series, and there was a script that was supposedly to be directed by John McNaughton, who did Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. There was a prequel script… I think it was called Krueger: The First Kills. And it was… the last children being killed… the two detectives that found Freddy and busted him… then the body of the film were the ambulance-chasing, sleazy lawyers that get Freddy off.”"

I want a prequal. However I also want some flashback scenes of him as a child. And unlike in the movie where he was abused they could show him coming from a loving family who adopted him. A scene of him at a normal family dinner as a child. He acts like a sweet little boy in front of his parents but later goes outside and strangled a stray cat.

I agree, I'm curious about the story of him as a child. I also agree too what we saw in Freddy's dead wasn't enough. I'd like to see the turning point from him as a loving child to what flipped on that switch to make him evil. I've often thought more like a psychologist and I don't see people being born evil. I guess for some it is possible but in most cases something happens. Maybe it could be something like a head injury that parents ignored or didn't know caused such serious damage. I don't know. But, I still think Wes is the only one who knows the answers and sadly he is gone.

I hear people saying this but to be fair, his father is one of the many mentally ill guys that raped his mom. So I would say he just had bad DNA that made him mentally ill from birth. I'd rather see the prequel more from the point of view of Marge, whatever her Dad's name was, and some of the other parents. Sorry. I tried looking up her Dad's name on imdb and the cast list for both this and Part 3 just has him as Lieutenant Thompson.

I think the idea is wonderful but sadly Freddy's creator is gone. I think Wes would be the only one who could pull it off. I really enjoyed New Nightmare which made Freddy scary again and more of almost a monster or demon than a silly clown the series made him. Wes only had his hands on the original & New Nightmare. The rest of the series is not Wes's creation. So for a real true prequel to happen Wes would have to come back and sadly that won't happen. Now, if he put something together before he passed that would be amazing but I don't see it happening or if it did happen I don't think real die hard fans would love it because it's not from Wes.

You never know though, I would never have thought a Planet of the Apes prequel would work but look what happened there. I have a lot of respect for Craven too but I don’t think it’s impossible to pay homage to the nightmare he created.

A prequel should include the spiritual mythology that allows Freddy to exist in dreams. Any movie that focuses only on the realistic aspects of his life is beating around the bush of what Freddy actually is.

Tell him to watch the first episode of "Freddy's Nightmares" then.
