The Actors that play the Advocates

Saeed Jaffrey as Advocate Hamidullah and Roshan Seth as Advocate Amrit Rao were a great team. They also played brothers in My Beautiful Laundrette, characters that held more screen time than in A Passage to India.

Seeing Jaffrey was a delight due to his great portrayal of Billy Fish in The Man Who Would Be King. His other associate (not played by Seth) was also familiar, if I recall, as the assassin in Gandhi and a nefarious narcotics smuggler in another film. I do not recall his name though. Jaffrey was also in Gandhi.

If you mean Art Malik... no, he wasn't in Gandhi, at least to my recollection. He's been in a lot of movies though - True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Bond film The Living Daylights, The Jewel in the Crown, I think he was on 24 for a season.

Both Jaffrey and Seth were both Gandhi together, as well. I recently watched Proof with Gwenyth Paltrow, Seth had a small role as a Mathematics teacher. He's a really good and underrated actor.

Stone, you can watch me or you can join me. One of them is more fun.

Yes, Art Malik and indeed he was not in Gandhi. I must have been thinking of him in something else. Do you remember him in a prison/narcotics smuggling movie -something along the lines of Brokedown Palace or Bangkok Hilton (though not those apparently)?

reply

I think you're talking about 'Shadow Of The Cobra', where he played the notorious real-life criminal Charles Sobhraj.

reply

Yes, that's it avix_007!

I cannot find much info on the movie itself but plenty about Sobhraj.

Just watched "Rumpole and the Quacks" an episode of Rumpole of the Bailey in which Saeed Jeffrey plays a doctor accused of improper behavior with a patient The storyline reference A PASSAGE TO INDIA (Jeffrey's character, in fact, mentions it specifically) and one of the characters is shown reading the novel.

In the 1962 Broadway version of Passage To India (itself transferred from West End) Saeed Jaffrey played Prof. Godbole, the part Alec Guinness plays in the movie.

reply

At least two of them also were in Gandhi.

Roshan Seth, Saeed Jaffery and ALSO Art Malik were in A Passage to India. I don't know why peeople are saying he was not. He's one of the friends of the accused doctors who plays an advocate and rages out of the court when he hears that Mrs Moore was taken away from India.

Art Malik was also the bad guy in City of Joy and True Lies. Colorful career.
