the caves

what actually happens to Adela in the caves? When she goes loopy and thinks Aziz has raped her?? Can anyone explain???

reply

I've just finished watching the film again. I think Adela became overwhelmed by the experience of the caves, confused by whether or not she loved Ronnie, and swept away by sexual frustration and the mere possibility that she might have been attracted to Aziz. I think she snapped (call it a mini-breakdown) and bolted - by the time she got down from the caves she was scratched and bloody from the cactus (?) and in shock. By then she had convinced herself that Aziz had indeed tried to rape her, for it was the only way she could accept the passion which had been aroused in her: it was not seemly for proper English ladies to lust after Indian men.

she was confused and her fiance and the lady that drove her home, both of whom already disliked the indians, put the idea in her head based on their own assumptions. then she was drugged up. so she hadnt really recalled what happened (which is explained well by harold) until she got on the stand
