Smallest College Football team ever?

I counted about 20 guys for the football team...Stan is an All_american QB but the team doesn't even have enough players for offense & defense.

Wayne Enterprises buys and sells companies like Stark Industries

Physically, they were not convincing for what is laid out to be a big time 4 year school. Looked more like what you would see at a 2 year school where you are just playing for fun instead of getting a bowl game berth and keeping the alumni happy. The one guard at the end I don't think was even 6 foot tall and he was about as wide as he was tall. Forget about him blocking downfield on a running play. One guy was so small looking (maybe about 5' 6" 130 pounds) I could not figure what he would be doing.
I would agree the roster is bit undermanned for a big time program. Again, I could see a 2 year school where guys have to play offense, defense, and kick coverage (special teams) instead of specializing in one aspect.

I never got the impression that it was a big school. Seemed rather small like a a Division 3 school. Except I don't think they don't have Bowl Games in the smaller divisions.

reply

Remember this was the early 1980's. There were far fewer bowl games than today. Especially outside of the large conferences.

reply

Adams College was more of a technical/skills related school anyway. I, like other people, assumed that it was a smaller school. The team size was unrealistic, but it was scaled down to make the movie work.

But smaller schools do have playoffs and bowl games too...

Pussy sport? Even though it is the most physical sport there is. It is technically the most difficult. The plays can get complicated. There are collisions (not just contact) on every play. If you bump into a soccer player their tampons fall out; you live for contact in football.
What is the most difficult thing about being a soccer player? Having to tell your dad that you're gay.
Oh and to answer your question, 63 in the pros. Typically around 70 in high schools where you can't get cut because they are public institutions and everyone is allowed to try out.
I wish you'd go to one--ONE--football practice. You'd be smashed to death.

Might be the case in the USA, except for Hockey, it's a pussy country when it comes to sport (I mean, there's nothing physical in Baseball and Basketball is the ultimate pussy sport as everything is deemed a "foul" and there aren't real contacts, it's the lamest sport that was ever invented)
If you watch it here in Europe, you will see a lot of nasty fouls, heavy injuries and sometimes really extreme stuff, like this:

You can actually see his bone in that pic...
Remember: Football players aren't padded out, they don't wear shoulder pads and other crap, while the studs on the boots can cause injuries rather easily.

While what is so extreme about American Football? They are so heavily padded, with helmets, shoulder pads and everything, i don't even understand how they manage to hurt themselves. Plus they only play a handful of games per year. If you talk about most physical, name Hockey. That's physical, there are injuries in basically every match because of the high speed, the hits, the fighting.

American Handball (Why is it even called Football for *beep* sake?) is a pretty boring sport. There's a reason why it's only popular in north america and why experiments like NFL Europe failed horribly.

reply

Again with the pads thing. The reason football players wear pads is because it is a collision sport. Some say contact sport, in honesty it is a collision sport. That is WHY they wear the pads. If you smashed into a soccer player you get penalized (carded? is that it?).
I agree with you about hockey, however.

I think the team in Unnecessary Roughness may have been smaller.

reply

I think that you mean Necessary Roughness. And I disagree. The team in Necessary Roughness had more big guys on it and it was a team that was supposed to suck. Unlike in ROTN, where the Adams football team was supposed to be good.

probably ran the wishbone.

The football team was small because the film had a small budget. Pretty simple to figure out. I don't remember anyone complaining about the unrealistic size of the team when the movie came out.

reply

It was obvious there was a lot of creative license taken with the football team. They were small in size and number. It did very little to detract from a very funny movie.

reply

At my alma mater very few football players belonged to fraternities. The football team was like an unofficial fraternity.
