Why did they have a charcter named 'Boner'?

Was it to see just if they could get away with it? Cus come on, boner has meant erect penis since before WWII.

Little Mike came up with that nickname based on Richard Stabone's last name. It was in a flashback showing them meeting each other at the bus stop on the first day of school. Little Mike said that "Richard" was a dorky name and came up with Boner.

I was wondering the same thing. Surely even the 80s the word boner was commonly used for an erection. It must have been some sick bet in the writer's room to see if the network would allow it.
