I'm sure most of you diehard fans know this episode. I was watching a re-run of it the other day. They showed a very sick scene where a black rhino was heard moaning in pain. MacGyver a lady go to check it out. A black rhino is then shown with it's horn chainsawed off. That scene was very disturbing and looked really real. I mean it didn't even look like a prop. My question is was the rhino a prop or could it have been a real one that just didn't have a horn? I can't imagine in 1989 they would've had props that look so real.

It was a realistic looking prop.

DiNozzo: "Are we fighting?"

I really hope it was a prop, it was a very disturbing scene.

Yes it was a prop. At the beginning of the episode they actually have a short statement saying that the rhino and the injury are animated. There's also an interview with RDA on youtube somewhere where he talks about this episode where this is mentioned. Obviously they would have never used a real injured Rhino for this.

According to the Trivia section for this episode, the prop rhino cost $40,000. Pretty pricey in terms of late 80's money.
