And I noticed that he actually fired a gun in the opening gambit of the pilot episode when he is rescuing the pilot.

Yeah, it was before the writers took the time to really work on his backstory. Once the pilot when to series they decided that Mac was anti-gun, later working in the reason why he hated guns.

He also pointed a revolver at a couple of bad guys in that same season when saving the "lady general". Finger on the trigger as well like hed use it.
