Promo pic of Chuck Norris as American Ninja! Amusing.

I just checked the movie on imdb site again and was pleasantly suprised seeing a promo pic of Chuck Norris as American Ninja for the first time. Cool! I had known about him being considered and even having promotional materials printed at the time since that’s how Cannon operated in those times. I just find it entertaining to think on what if, if it really happened.

That's pretty awesome. Thanks for posting.

I wonder how far negotiations went with Chuck and why exactly they fell through.

I have to say though, while it would've been interesting to see Chuck in the role, Michael Dudikoff IS Joe Armstrong. He was the right guy. No one else is the American ninja.

Negotiations usually fall through due to money.

On the UK Blu-Ray for Invasion USA the co-writer, James Bruner, says he was hired to work with Chuck to write a film called American Ninja. Chuck noted he did not want to make a Ninja movie again, so Bruner came up with the idea of a script where Chuck plays a plainclothes covert operative fighting against terrorists in an operation codenamed "Operation American Ninja". Bruner and Norris presented the script to Menham Golan; Golan said that he liked the script, but it could not be filmed or released as American Ninja. Accordingly Bruner and Norris script was slightly tweaked and filmed as Invasion USA, and Cannon hired Dudikoff to make a film with the American Ninja title. Bruner also noted he did some uncredited but paid script doctoring on American Ninja, so he did pretty well out of the whole thing!

That's interesting!

I'd say things worked out for the best. As it stands, we got a proper ninja movie with American Ninja and also got an iconic 80s Chuck Norris movie with Invasion USA. Trying to take a script like American Ninja and turning it into a pseudo-ninja movie where the lead character is not a ninja likely would've yielded a result that left something to be desired.

Wow that's really fascinating info. Thanks for sharing that.

I adore both American Ninja and Invasion USA. It was actually good Chuck held out on signing on the dotted line for American Ninja, because otherwise we only would have had American Ninja and not Invasion USA!
