Bad timing / bad title?

Remembering back to when I was a teen - given the media uproar over the outing of tennis champ Billie Jean King, and the the relative timing of the release of this movie, I always thought (as a kid) that this movie was about a girl outing herself and the subsequent uproar (cuts hair off, goes on the lam, etc.)

*Remember, back then we didn't have one-touch access to information re: movie plotlines, etc.*

Maybe that is why it wasn't as well received as it could have been? Back in those days (good gawd nearly a quarter century ago O.o )there was some inherent prejudice in the media, (and honestly, the populace) re: homosexuality and such, so I'm not sure.

But yeah. I just saw it and it's not a bad movie actually.

So, by "outing Billie Jean King" you mean that the seventies-eighties tennis player Billie Jean King came out as lesbian? If so, then it's an interesting connection. I can imagine that people in that time may have thought the movie would be about the tennis player.
