Is the viewer supposed to see Bruce Spence as the same or different?

Is the viewer supposed to see Bruce Spence as the same pilot or different from Mad Max 2?

reply

Pretty sure different.

reply

I was very confused about this. He has such a recognizable appearance and when he nor Max recognized each other, I was just confused.

reply

The cute blond he hooked up with in Road Warrior must have been a dentist!

Keith Moon was the greatest 'Keith Moon Style' drummer ever!!

I always assumed a twin brother that had been separated early in the apocalypse and never reconnected. Dumb luck or the Hand of Fate that led Max to both.

WORDS MEAN THINGS! Also, before you come to bitch about a plot hole, rewatch the show/movie.

reply

I think the same only because he did end up with the blonde at the end of Road Warrior and he does fly a vehicle.
I just wished Max would've said, "Partners!" or something to hint at their previous encounter.

If its simply the same actor then why not give him something different to make him stand out?

reply

plus, he had a little blond kid calling him Dad, so I always assumed the girl died or something and he's raising the kid to be a scavenger like him

Exactly what I thought, when I was a kid and saw this many times.

Apparently not true (see explanation repeated on every forum available below) but I still find it annoying.

Just because people want it to be the same character doesn't mean it is the same character. The Gyro captain is the chief of the Great Northern tribe. He's not Jedediah the jalopy pilot. Two different characters played by the same actor.

This is a technique that was used by tv and film quite frequently in the 70's and 80's:

Randi Oaks in Season 2 of "CHiPs" was a car thief named Kim Balford and then in Seasons 3-5 was a regular cast member as highway patrol officer Bonnie Clark.

Albert Popwell was a bank robber in the original "Dirty Harry" in which Clint gives his famous line. Then in "Magnum Force" he's a sadistic pimp who's murdered, then in the "Enforcer" he's a radical black activist and informer and finally in "Sudden Impact" he is Harry's police force buddy.

Kas Garas also played four different characters, usually bad guys, in four different episodes in four different seasons in "The Streets of SF"

Martin Ferrero played a bad guy who gets killed in the pilot episode of "Miami Vice" and then 8 episodes later stars in a recurring role for the rest of the series as Izzy, the Vice Cops' main informant.

This list goes on and on, but the point is, they're not the same character, just the same actor.

You forgot The Love Boat and Fantasy Island, but I get the point. I noticed both CHiPs and the Dirty Harry movies. He gave him that bulldog, Horace.

You mean case closed on your fan fiction.

I'll give your credit, you have quite an imagination, so I'll entertain you and respond:

1. Why would the Gyro Captain leave the northern tribe and go back to the wasteland? That makes no sense at all, and goes against everything in MM2. The character of the Gyro Capt actually changed from a scavenging thief to a trusted friend and leader in MM2. So now he gave up leading the tribe and "breeding" on the beach with his lady to going back to thievery and stealing in the wasteland and just so happens to come across Max again and decides to rob him? What?! The same man he wanted to be partners with and who saved his life from Lord Humongus' gang and he decides to just go against all that just to satisfy your fan fiction blog? I don't think so.

2. Not everyone can OWN a flying vehicle either. So the Gyro Capt has a gyrocopter and an airplane in his possession? I guess he has a Lear jet somewhere too? And where did he get this airplane, he was leading his tribe and driving a bus caravan towards the beach at the end of MM2. Also, just because one can fly a gyrocopter doesn't mean one can fly an airplane or vice versa.

3. Jedidiah Sr was blonde.

4. Once again, fan fiction. Gyro Capt had rotten teeth and Jedidiah had good teeth, it's obviously a film goof in MM2 if there was a scene where Gyro Capt had good teeth. That happens all the time in the Austin Powers movies.

5. Just rewatched the scene and yes Jedidah noticed Max in Bartertown because he happened to be walking with Ironbar and his guards and a lot of people were noticing them. It's definitely a connection to the fact that Jedidiah may or may not know Max was the guy he robbed and may try to get his stuff back.

6. Never once while watching the Thunderdome match did it seem like Jedidiah was "worried." That is your fan fiction opinion and nothing more. Jedidiah was just being entertained and chanting like all the other rabble.

7. If you watch the scene again, Jedidiah Jr was shouting to Sr to "Get to the Plane!" several times before Max spoke to him. Max could've heard that or recognized him because of the safari hat, either way it fits with the beginning of the movie and has nothing to do with the Gyro Capt.

8. Miller probably realized so many fans were confused like yourself because they WANTED to see the Gyro Capt again that he purposely made Immortan Joe's face covered so fans like you wouldn't create threads like this saying "Toecutter is Immortan Joe!" Of course that still occurred on the Fury Road board.

So you respond with more fan fiction? C'mon you're trolling now.

Besides everything I mentioned, the only thing you need to know is in the credits of MM2, Bruce Spence's character is listed as the Gyro Captain and in MMBT his character is listed as Jedidiah the Pilot. Not the same character as listed in the credits.

I can't wait to read your fan fiction regarding that.

reply

I think the intent of the film makers was for the characters to be different. I think when they "recognize" each other near the end of the movie is just supposed to be a funny moment for the fans.

It's a different character, quite obviously. The people who think it's the same clearly haven't seen Road Warrior. I don't know why people think this sort of thing is unheard of.

Some of these people need to see things like the Dollars "trilogy"...you see the same handful of actors in multiple movies all playing different characters...the main bad guy in Fistful of Dollars is the bad guy in For A Few Dollars More. Why are people acting like actors don't play different characters in the same series? Eastwood technically plays 3 different characters (though they're all the same cause it's Eastwood, not that that's a bad thing), the Man with no Name thing came from American marketing material. He is named in all 3 movies and he has a different name in all 3. Joe, Manco and Blondie.

Maud Adams in the Bond series played 2 different characters in different films. As did Charles Gray. Their characters were both murdered in their first film appearance.

So I know the 2 pilots in Mad Max could be a tad confusing because Spence is a pilot in both movies, but it's pretty obvious for those who have actually seen Road Warrior that Spence is playing a different character in Beyond Thunderdome.

Eastwood technically plays 3 different characters

His names in the trilogy are all nicknames. Clint wears the same outfit in each film, with the exception of the beginning of GoodBadUgly, which takes place before Dollars. And he's a mix of mercenary, bounty hunter, and conman to varying degrees throughout. I don't know how Blondie lost all his money after GBU, but to me it's the same character.

As for Gyro Captain and Jedidiah, different guys. If only for the fact that Jed doesn't talk nearly as much as Gyro.

Thit and thpin!

Ye I am here to second that you are wrong about Eastwood in the dollars trilogy
