isn't Waterworld just an extremely over budget version of Thunderdome... think loosely here.

Well it copied aspects of Thunderdome, the community having rules and laws, and the end was almost the same - finding a new lost land to settle on but mainly copied Road Warrior.

Hero bonds with kid.

Waterworld is a lot more enjoyable than Thunderdome though.

Yes. Kevin Costner was drunk on the success of Dances With Wolves. That was a brilliant, unique movie deserving of all the fame heaped on him. But, he couldn't replicate it's success, so he stole ideas and it is very much like Thunderdome.
