I never got what comment of his made her say that? Was it that Debbie was the most beautiful girl in school(meaning prettier than Toni) or when he said "You probably don't even feel the same way" and she was ticked he couldn't see how she really felt? That line has always bugged me. Any opinions?
Well, he began dating Debbie but realized she wasn't what he expected her to be - their relationship was brief - possibly two weeks at most. So, the same night he really realizes they aren't compatible (his birthday party) ... he doesn't even break up with Debbie before he approaches Toni about dating. As much as she liked/loved him ... the events that happened earlier that night were still overshadowing those feelings she had for him & she was clearly very upset.
Also, remember Toni was the one who through him that birthday party & she believed Debbie & Michael had sex - that he lost his virginity to her in Toni's parent's bedroom. She was very upset even after he explained that they actually didn't do anything up there. She clearly stated she felt used.
She asks, "What the hell happened to Debbie?" Then, he says the whole thing about her being ... "the most beautiful girl in the world, but you can only look for so long because once the lights are on ... nobody's home."
Which in my opinion is an insult to Toni - saying Debbie is beautiful but she's not all there. You're not as beautiful ... but you are all there. He even insulted her in the beginning of the movie - saying he had standards so he'd never dated her - commented on her being able to grow a mustache as well. He was picking & choosing - tried one ... didn't like it & wanted the other.
I think it was all a huge build up & she was pissed & wanted to get it all out - she was in love with him ... he was dating one of her best friends, Michael & Debbie were getting serious, but she's the friend to both & she throws the party - she was in the position no girl wants to be in ... then he confesses he wants to go on a date with her, you know? She was upset because she thought she was being used.
Yeah, well said. I agree. She didn't want to be his sloppy seconds. But more than that, I think that she was incredibly pissed about Michael not realizing how beautiful a person she was & all of her anger & frustration that she had previously buried finally came out. I would have done the same thing.
shareI agree with illegiblemessss but I do want to add one thing. I think Michael realized that Debbie's ugliness helped him to finally see Toni's beauty. Not just her inner beauty but helped him to see that she was also beautiful on the outside. Yes, Debbie, in Michael's opinion, may have been the most beautiful girl in the world, but he's not saying Toni is not beautiful.

Agreed, illegiblemessss. I took it to mean that Toni was mad it took him realising Debbie was not who he thought she was to even consider Toni as a prospect, instead of just seeing her for who she was and loving it in the first place. I actually thought she might forgive him at that point, but I'm so glad she didn't, because it really was an as$hole thing for him to do. He only wanted Toni after he didn't want Debbie. Couple that with throwing a party for your best friend, him not appreciating it and instead using it as an opportunity to have sex, and then having to clean up everything afterwards while feeling like crap...I would be pissed off too.
I only do it with superheroes.
Well look at her perspective: you throw a birthday party for the guy who you're secretly in love with. Not 2 seconds after the cake he takes off upstairs to bang your friend and then they ditch you in the middle of the party. He later comes knocking at your door 4am telling you he couldn't get it on with her even though she's the most beautiful girl in the world, so could he have a go with you?

This movie rocks by the way. Totally classic like a john Hughes but more hilarious, I can't believe I've never heard of it til now.

It was because she was in love with him and was very upset that they had a birthday party for Michael and Debbie ended up having sex in her parents room without her knowledge.Well they tried to anyway.
