Friedkin's last gem.

He really fell off the face of the earth after this.

I really liked Killer Joe, despite after watching it, feeling like I never need to see it again. You know how you can watch To Live and Die in L.A. a thousand times and always dig it? Killer Joe didn't leave me with any urge whatsoever to re-evaluate. Anyway, it was a compelling and somewhat bizarre neonoir that seemed a bit all over the place, but it was interesting.

I'd say this is his last GREAT film. One of my favs, ever, in fact.

Thanks, looking forward to checking out "Killer Joe" now. I feel exactly the same way about T.L.A.D.I.L.A, just finished watching it for maybe the 10th time and it's always a total thrill!

Killer Joe isn't a masterpiece, but to put out something original like that after such a long career is laudable.

"Bug" got barely a mention in this thread, just as it was barely noticed in theaters, but I'd submit that film as evidence that Friedkin is indeed still capable of directing gems. It's genuinely creepy and weird, owing much to the powerhouse performance of Michael Shannon but also to Friedkin's uncanny ability to disturb the viewer when he tries.

This film has always been one of my absolute favourites. I think it may have been the first Friedkin film I saw, though posibly I had seen bts of Connection and Exorcist on tv briefly.

I first discoverd it in an interview with one of my favourite comic book writers (Christopher Priest, who really has dropped off the face of the earth), I think I was about twelve at the time and on blind faith bought a VHS off of ebay. I think it is a perfect film, complex, layered, brilliantly acted and with a great soundtrack (yes I am a Wang Chung fan).

To be fair there are a few films post-TLaDiLA which I haven't seen, mainly as I have been holding of buying them in case beter releases come out. But I've been doing this for several years and there has been no luck, so I will need to start tracking some of those full-screen DVD transfers down... even if some of them do star goddamn Caruso.

Anyway, I haven't seen Killer Joe yet (though it arrived in the post yesterday so I shall be remedying this shortly), but Bug is an exceptional film. The Hunted is okay, but Bug is outstanding.

EDIT - Killer Joe is also excellent. Though granted I prefer TLaDiLA to all Friedin films I have seen since its release.

Time to blow
