Any animation similar to When the wind blows?

I work in a library and have been asked to find out if there are any animations similar to 'When the wind blows'. Can anyone recommend anything please? Thanks

The only thing done in a similar style is THE SNOWMAN. There is a japanese animated film called GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES that follows two orphans after the Atom bomb attacks during WW2. Its a stunning film with real emotion and the English Dubbing is good. A similar story done in live action is THREADS. Its a fictitious BBC film drama about the effects of a nuclear attack on Britain, Sheffield in particular, and follows a family throughout the drama. This was made in the 80s and still has huge impact today because of its gritty, unflinching, realism. It is available in the UK on DVD, i have it myself. An american version was also made around the same time, 80s, called AFTER THE BOMB and is also available in the UK.

another cartoon involving atom bombs is BAREFOOT GEN. i think its based on a true story of a little boy in japan in WW2 during the bombing.

Not atom bombs, but firebombing.

"Its a stunning film with real emotion and the English Dubbing is good."

I would recommend the one with original dialogue + english subtitles.

there was a short film on channel 4 around christmas with very similar animation and it was about life in the trnches during world war one, and towards the end it had a bitter undertone like when the wind blows, i cant remeber the name but it hadquite a few famous british names in it, if any one else remebers that can you please tell me what its called?

reply

it was called grandpa i believe. don't quote me but i think it was.

Yeah, you gotta hear the original japanese on Grave of the Fireflies - the voice acting is absolutely brilliant. The English dubbing is adequate, but it is impossible to match the detail and care that went into the original dialogue track (a real little girl of about the right age does the voice of the little girl, etc.).

I would like to ad two movies which are absolutely not about atom bombs or war, but are very similar, anyway. They are animations which are definitely not for children although one could think they are and the atmosphere of the movies reminds me to "When the wind blows"

The first one is "Watership down". It's about a society of rabbits, but actually it is truely about menkind. They have leaders and followers, the ones who got everything and that ones who are toarchured. It's about war and peace, love and hate, slavery and freedom, everything we see in our human society.

The second one is "Plague dogs". It's about two dogs who escaped from a research laboratory. The story is not easy to describe but it has a very horrifying atmosphere just like "When the wind blows"

well you are a bit vague- if you mean animation style I recommend a japanese ace anime called memories- its 3 shorts but the final really reminded me of when the wind blows.
As for films with similar contents, all self respecting anime has some kind of reference to the Heroschema bomb and the devastation it can cause.

"Hiroshima"... Geez.

It's been said, but definitely Watership Down and the Plague Dogs, highly recommended.

I've seen most of the recommended films, and I have to say the one that reminded me the most of "When the wind blows" is definetely "Grave of the fireflies".

It's done by Miyazaki(spirited away, princess mononoke)'s assistant director, and the animation is quite above average. story is excellent too.

"Memories" is also good, I guess the segment the other poster refers to is the last one, which is indeed very good, but with a very different tone (more "Dr. Strangelove" than "When the wind blows"). Still very good.

reply

It's not by Miyazaki, but by Isao Takahata. But it was made in the Gibli animation company.

There is a Czech film called Konec srpna v Hotelu Ozon (1967) IMDB;. It was in American distribution for some time.

reply

That's what I meant Vesely, "Miyazaki's assistant director" (Takahata-san, of course...

reply

yeah, "Memories" is a very good suggestion.

both for the "Cannon Fodder" feature and "Stink Bomb".

Hi! I'm.... Tommy, and I'm your friend to the end. Hi Di Ho. Ha ha ha.

"The Plague Dogs" has about the same equal sadness as this film, and is animated in the same dark way.

I saw this movie billed as a "black comedy".. so I rented it and thought I was in for an Edde Murphy/Sinbad laughfest. I was wrong!

While you're at the library, you might as well look up "The Day of the Bomb", by Karl Bruckner. It's not an animation, but it's a very good book on the atomic bombs in Japan. Only trouble is, it was published in 1963, so not many libraries still have it.

"The Snowman" and "Father Christmas", both also based on Raymond Briggs picture books. Though they are much, much, much lighter and more child friendly.
