Crispin Glover's character

Crispin Glover's character Lucas was, by far, the strangest character in the movie, in my opinion. I was watching it again last night, and trying to understand where the character was coming from. I'm wondering if he was written that way, or Crispin just kind of did his own thing. Maybe the character was supposed to be on drugs most of the time, does anyone know? Don't get me wrong, he had some very funny if not unusual lines (his 1st scene), but I was just wondering.

My opinion is that given what these men were capable of, robbery, murder, drug dealing, etc., it would seem only fitting that someone as psychotic and loopy as Crispin Glover's character (and some would say the man himself!) would attatch himself to people like this. Although, I did think that given how unstable and out of it he seemed, "Brad Sr." would have thought of him as more of a liablity than a reliable member of his "gang". All in all, Glover's character definitely seemed "at home" in this creepy and twisted movie and his contribution to the film only validated it's tale of indifference, betrayl and extreme family dysfunction.

Glover's character was in love with Penn's character. He resented Robin coming into his life that's why he went along with the rape by Brad Snr so willingly.

Yeah, Glover's character was creepy as hell, but really funny. What got me was how unfazed Sean Penn's character was by his remarks, considering he had the hots for him.

That whole chimp-like behavior of beating the rocks to pieces was quite odd.

In real life, Crispen Glover was one strange dude in the 1980's. Anyone that has not yet seen it, google "Crispen Glover David Letterman". His first Letterman appearance in the 80's is still one of the most genuinely strange interviews in TV history, where Glover almost kicks Letterman in the head. In character or not, that kick came very close to connecting.

You aren't kidding. I have never liked him.

Yeah wtf was wrong with the guy? He came across like a transsexual on PCP.

He did have a great moment though in his very last scene when you could read from his face that, through whatever madness it was that plagued him, he realized what was gonna happen to him next.

He gave a very good performance playing another bizarre character in "River's Edge" (1987) which was also based on a true story.

This was back when Crispin was a hot commodity due to Back To The Future. He could get any role he wanted and he got these weird as hell oddball roles that made people go "WTF?" more than take him seriously. This was prob the best performance of those but that's saying a lot.

Having a great cast and story around him saved his performance from ruining the film somewhat. But I have to give it to him he never stops being entertaining.

In addition to being in love with Brad Jr., I got the sense that maybe Brad Sr. had either gotten physically playful with Crispin's character prior to the scene in the truck, or at the very least flirted with him a fair amount. Crispin clearly feels very comfortable around Brad Sr. when they're passing the bottle back and forth. Thought it was a nice touch, even (especially) if it wasn't scripted.

His performance in this movie reminded me of the movie River's Edge, where he was playing a similar crazy character.
