Question about Brad Whitewood Sr. Gang Member

I just saw the movie and was confused about a scene where one of Brad Whitewood Sr's gang members (Tony Pine)was shown in a bed and was in pain, such that he had to put a rag in his mouth. Was he shooting up? I did not understand that scene. Anyone have any idea's?

reply

I think he was having an epileptic fit.

reply

Yeah, I thinks that's what it had to be. It really was out of nowhere, though. Definitely wasn't necessary to show.

reply

Well, it wasn't really from "out of nowhere" - earlier in the film when Brad Sr. was introducing the gang to Brad Jr., he says: "And this is Tony Pine, he's epileptic". I think they put that in the film because it was starting to get tense in the gang due to all the f-ups.

reply

Yeah, you're right. It definitely upped the intensity. I guess I more-so meant that it seemed more was going to happen, but he just started freaking out, then bit a towel.

reply

The towel is to keep himself from swallowing his tongue during the seizure, or to prevent him from biting it.

reply

He was having a seizure. As a side note, you should never put anything into the mouth of someone having a seizure -- it increases the risk of aspiration and of blocking the airway. It is physically impossible to swallow your tongue and it's better to bite it than to interfere with breathing.

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

reply

Good point. That tongue-swallowing thing is an old and potentially harmful myth.

Notes are to tones as numerals are to numbers.

reply

It's definitely possible to swallow the tongue or atleast get it stuck in the throat. has happened many times in soccer etc...

reply

Definately an epi fit.

Rag was used because individuals tend to bite down and could bite his tongue off.

reply

Stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, severe depression can all be triggers for epileptic seizures, so it does make sense that they would show that.

reply

I thought it was someone in Brad's prison cell, and he was trying to kill himself, since he had something in his mouth and was moving around uncontrollably, i couldnt tell who he was or what he was doing as it shows him in the dark.

Was tony pine in the cell with brad, as i think brad was still in prison at that point ?

Gawd help us.... people of limited intelligence should avoid movies that have any kind of depth in them, I swear.

Nice early cameo by David Strathairn. Wasn't even aware it was him.

Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe *beep* yourself.

That character was based on the real life Ricky Mitchell, who was an epileptic among other things. A rather loathsome according to the detectives/agents who had to work with him (he ended up turning against the Johnston brothers).
