Never Cared for Madonna...

but I must say that the use of "Live To Tell" at the close is one more haunting and beautiful aspect to this film. Especially because it counterbalances the instrumental in the beginning.

Great point buddy. Every time I hear that song I think of the film At Close Range, the song is perfect in the film, and like you said, it gives a haunting and chilling feeling too the end of the film. Fits perfectly into the film. I wonder if it was written especially for the film?

I agree. It is haunting and beautiful. It's one of her best songs. I like the songs that Madonna did in the 80's and 90's, but I don't like the ones she has done since then.

It was a great song, but it sure as hell didn't deserve a credit above the cast of characters at the end of the movie.

wiki says it was written by patrick leonard for the movie "fire with fire", the song was shown to madonna who decided to use it for her then husband sean penns movie "at close range.

Yes, Madonna's song 'Live to Tell' was perfect for this film, Her song for the film 'A league of their own', 'This use to be my playground' was also perfect in that film and really fit the tone perfectly. Two very emotional and moving songs, great job by Madonna.

It's such a haunting song. When I was six years old, I was a huge Madonna fan, and while I didn't really understand what most of her music was about, I knew even then that this was a melancholy, sad song.

The instrumental version heard during the opening credits makes me think of Chris Penn, his character in the film, and Mary Stuart Masterson's character. And Brad's disillusionment with his old man and the pain when he discovers the truth and loses the girl he loves and his brother.

Thanks for that link, the comments section is great on that Youtube video, a lot of people talking about their memories from the 80's.

Madonna has four hit songs that were used in films that are so good that whenever you hear them you think of the film. "Live To Tell" from "At Close Range," "This Used To Be My Playground" from "A League Of Their Own," "Crazy For You" from "Vision Quest," and "Into The Groove" from "Desperately Seeking Susan."
