Tommy Lee Jones' Daytona

Did anyone notice that it was given the sound of a large block V8? The largest engines those front wheel drive beaters were given was a Mitsubishi turbo V6, and they did not sound anywhere close like a Hemi.

The largest engines those ever had were 2.5L Chrysler 4 cylinder engines, with the turbo being a 2.2 (I worked on a lot of those back in the '80's and '90's).. This wasn't the only movie that they "butched up" the Daytona with a V8 sound effect.. seemed like they did that to sell cars (Chyrsler products were featured prominently in the movie)..

There was a replacement K-member Chrysler made for the Daytona(as well as other K-car based platform fwd mopars) so a Mopar small block V8 could be installed longitudinally making it a RWD car for racing. More than a few made their into street cars.

They're not made anymore but there are custom shops who make versions of it.

I'm watching it now and thought the same thing. They probably would have sold a bunch more if they could get them to really sound like that

It was a very nice looking car.
