It happens all the time, somebody gets nominated a bunch of times and never wins and then they kind of give a "makeup" or "career" Oscar for a lesser role later in their career.
the same for john wayne who won for true grit. should have won for the searchers.
He was good in this movie but better in the original film, The Hustler.
