Who is this aimed at?

It has a lot of adult jokes in it but at the same time feels like a kids movie.

I used to watch this movie a lot when I was a kid on VHS. Seeing as I was born in 1984, this would have been '88-'90 when I was 4-6 years old. I think the silliness appealed to my nascent brain, and much of the 'adult' (and a liitle creepy) humor flew right over my head (bad pun). It was a simpler time and the graphics/stop-motion were impressive to a child. I also loved Star Wars and was prolly predisposed to want to like it because of Lucas' involvement.

I made a similarly aged girlfriend watch it with me a few years back because she had never seen it, and she rightly could not understand what I ever saw in it. It was painful.

I have been in a few nauseating ironic hipster conversations with people my age where this movie is praised. To wit, this is perfect ironic hipster flair: "I hate everything you like, and like everything you hate."

To answer your question directly...this is another film that tried to do everything (and appeal to everyone), yet accomplished nothing (and appealed to no one).
