Tom Berenger deserved an Oscar

One of the strongest acting performances I have ever seen.

That was a tough year for Supporting Actor. I love Michael Caine but of that year's contenders I would have given the Oscar either to Berenger or to Denholm Elliott in A Room With A View. Dafoe was excellent too, but Berenger was the best he's ever been.

This just shows how worthless the Academy voters are. Berenger over Caine any day of the week.

Shall we play a game?

reply

I think Caine won because Berenger and Dafoe cancelled each other out. It would've been best if one of them was not nominated and they would've had a better chance of winning.

Berenger had one great performance, Caine is always superb. Sometimes I wonder if the average moviegoer remembers what happened before today.

He makes for a great psychopath. Sometimes when I see an actor who is to good I think-Are they really good or are they not acting and maybe just crazy?

"a perfect casting", you meant to say. Very often the only thing that can turn a potentially mediocre performance into a memorable one is a good director.

I agree. He was superb.

I agree, but this is why i could care less about Oscars. If i wanted to only watch movies that made Oscars, I'd be bored to death. Oscar movies are usually lame and feel too long for me. I love this movie and Berenger did have the performance of a life time.

He was very good in this. He was also very impressive as a character in an earlier film, The Dogs Of War, where at times he almost stole the film from Christopher Walken. I don't really see the Oscars as an index of acting quality. They are more about Hollywood politics.

One of the greatest performances of all time. The entire film is a near masterpiece, but Berenger's performance took it to another level. Willem Dafoe and Berenger's presence were omnipresent in the film (even when they're weren't onscreen). That's the mark of a timeless performance.
