"We fought ourselves. And the enemy was in us."

No!

The enemy was the VC, who was shooting at you and planting landmines. I do not want to start a big discussion as to why the US got involved in Vietnam, but I can tell you with certainty that the mission was not so our soldiers can find their inner selves.

Through Sgt. Taylor's final analysis, Oliver Stone tries too hard to sound poetic and philosophical, and ends up just sounding stupid. It brings to mind a Deep Though, by Jack Handy:

It's funny that pirates were always going around searching for treasure, and they never realized that the real treasure was the fond memories they were creating.

Pass it on.

Sure seemed like Barnes spent a lot of time fighting and fragging his comrades.
